Today we worked on adding and subtracting mixed numbers.
  • The first method I taught was to separate the whole numbers and fractions. Add the whole numbers first, then work to add the fractions.
  • The second method I taught (used mostly for subtraction) was to turn the mixed number into an improper fraction, find common denominator, then subtract. At the end they are to turn the improper fraction (their answer) back into a mixed number,

Textbook work: Pg 84-85 # 3, 4, 5, and 7 was assigned for homework.

Students are also encouraged to log-in to IXL math at home and practice F.7- Convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions. They can also practice G.3- Adding fractions with unlike denominators. This is a great website that students can log into at anytime for extra math practice with any concepts they may be struggling with.
